A new 2 storey junior classroom block for St Michaels Catholic School Remuera provided an opportunity to test innovative open classroom teaching plan layouts with one on one instruction available in teachers' alcoves off the main classroom space. Large circular windows make these alcoves fun and inviting places to be in.Classrooms are light and airy with exposed timber roof trusses on the upper level. Energy is kept to a minimum as a result of substantial insulation and use of natural light.
The bright multi hued classroom fenestration provide a playful backdrop to the exterior covered verandahs extending the full length of the block on both levels.
Important pedestrian links between the north and sout enries within the school have been reinstated and strengthened.
The lower ground level verandah steps onto terraced concrete bleachers spread across the bank overlooking the playing fields- the green vista offering a peaceful space for pupils at the school to enjoy.
